When a child sustains a burn injury, their life is
changed forever. Hoosier Burn Camp, founded in 1998, was started to provide
peer support for these children. Summer camp is a special experience for all
children. But HBC combines the "good old fashioned fun of summer camp" with
the life skills kids need to fully recover from the serious trauma of burn
injuries.
Participation in a variety of individual and shared activities provides kids
with a sense of independence and accomplishment. Camp volunteers assist
children to achieve greater self awareness and confidence, which transfers
to other areas of life, such as school and home.
The healing power of the beautiful outdoors of YMCA Camp Tecumseh is the
location of HBC for the year. It is challenging, without being too rugged,
and is fully handicapped accessible. The laughter and smiles of old friends
and new make summer camp memories that last a lifetime.
Our motto touches on a portion of the feelings and emotions experienced from
a week at camp. Imagine arriving at a reunion of people that have become as
close as family. Some campers are so excited about seeing their friends,
catching up and creating new memories that will last a lifetime that they
will pack their bags weeks in advance. These campers have learned through
the support of their extended family and camp activities that life has many
challenges and their success is not limited. As each camper develops and
matures back home, they draw on those experiences to face new challenges
without fear. Camp is a special place that is impossible to capture in
words.
